Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson, AO (born January 3, 1956) is an actor, film director, film producer and screenwriter. Born in New York, Gibson moved to Sydney, Australia when he was 12 years old and later studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. After appearing in the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon series, Gibson went on to direct and star in the Academy Award-winning Braveheart. Gibson's direction of Braveheart made him the sixth actor-turned-filmmaker to receive an Academy Award for Best Director. In 2004, he directed and produced The Passion of the Christ, a controversial but successful film that portrayed the last hours of the life of Jesus Christ.
After six years of break, the actor recalled participating in a film, said today the film magazine "Variety". Gibson, 52, will perform in the film suspenseful "Edge of Darkness" to a policeman who wants to clarify the mysterious death of his daughter. The film will be directed by Martin Campbell ( "Casino Royale"). Gibson was the last time in 2002 on the films "Signs" and "We were heroes." The star of "Lethal Weapon" then directed "The Passion of the Christ" and the Mayan drama "Apocalypto." To make memory, Gibson was arrested in the summer of 2006 while driving his car in a drunken state. Following the arrest underwent detoxification therapy and a regular participant in the self-help group Alcoholics Anonymous.
